Data Streamer Google Sheets
Goals
- Connect proprietary hardware to Google Sheets
- Support real-time and batch logging
- Improve cross-platform compatibility
Bridging Hardware and Cloud Data
This project was developed for Sensor Electronics to facilitate seamless data transmission from their hardware devices directly to Google Sheets. We replaced a legacy Excel-based firmware solution with a robust desktop application built using Rust and the Tauri framework.
The development process involved close collaboration with the client to define requirements. A major challenge was firmware incompatibility on Linux and macOS with default drivers. We identified these bottlenecks, reported them to the firmware team, and implemented a fix. The final solution enables both batch and real-time logging to Google Sheets. Leveraging Rust's memory safety and zero-cost abstractions, we built a resilient bridge between unstable hardware serial connections and the cloud. Tauri allowed us to maintain a lightweight footprint while delivering a native feel across operating systems.
Process
- 1
Discovery & Requirements
Held structured workshops with Sensor Electronics engineers to map the full data path: sensor firmware → USB/Serial → desktop app → Google Sheets, and documented output formats, sampling rates, and sheet templates.
- 2
Firmware & Driver Audit
Ran the legacy device on Windows, Linux, and macOS, reproduced driver failures on Linux/macOS with default serial drivers, and filed a detailed bug report with the firmware team; jointly implemented and verified the fix.
- 3
Architecture Design
Designed a Rust core with tokio async tasks for serial I/O, a lock-free local write-ahead buffer for offline resilience, and a Tauri frontend contract; selected Google Sheets API v4 with a service-account token refresh strategy.
- 4
Prototype & Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing
Built an early prototype streaming live sensor data into Sheets; tested against cable swaps, device resets, and simulated network dropouts to validate reconnection and buffering.
- 5
Implementation
Developed the production Tauri app: real-time row streaming, batch import mode, back-pressure handling, exponential-backoff reconnects, and structured logging for field diagnostics.
- 6
QA & Deployment
Ran soak tests (multi-hour continuous logging) and cross-platform installers for Windows/Linux/macOS; delivered the app with a usage guide and handed over to the client's operators.
